Dengue claims 11 more lives, highest in a day this year

Eleven more deaths were reported from dengue in the past 24 hours till Sunday morning, marking the highest single-day death toll this year.

With this, the number of fatalities from the mosquito-borne disease in Bangladesh rose to 459, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Five of the latest fatalities were reported in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), four in the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), and two in Khulna division (outside the city corporation).

Earlier, the country logged 10 more deaths in the previous 24 hours each on 2 and 23 November.

Besides, as many as 1,079 more patients were hospitalised with viral fever in a 24-hour span till Sunday morning.

Of them, 272 were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka division, 194 under the DNCC, and 121 under the DSCC.

A total of 86,791 dengue cases have been reported since 1 January.

Last year, 1,705 people lost their lives due to dengue, making it the deadliest year on record.

The DGHS registered 3,21,179 cases and 3,18,749 recoveries in 2023.
