A Dhaka court has granted bail to Mahmudur Rahman, the former acting editor of the newspaper Amar Desh, who was convicted in the case involving the attempted abduction and murder of Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Ash-Shams Joglul Hossain approved his bail on Thursday.

Mahmudur Rahman surrendered before the court of Dhaka's Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubul Haque last Sunday. Later, the court ordered him to be sent to jail.

On 17 August in 2023, Dhaka's Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzaman Noor delivered the verdict in this case. In the ruling, the court sentenced five individuals, including journalist Shafik Rehman and Mahmudur Rahman, to seven years of imprisonment.
