The government will not increase the price of electricity, despite instructions from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), said Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Adviser Fauzul Kabir Khan.
He made the statement in response to a question from journalists in Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed's office today (19 December).
He said, "The IMF had said the electricity price should be increased to reduce the subsidy pressure. We told them that the common people are already under pressure due to high inflation. Raising the price of electricity at this time will further increase the suffering of the people. The IMF has accepted our words."
"We are trying to reduce the subsidy by reducing the cost of electricity generation. We have cancelled the special provision that was made for the power sector in 2010. Government secretaries were on the boards of various power companies, and they have been removed. The corruption that used to happen there is being stopped," he assured.
