In a bid to stabilise the egg market, around seven lakh eggs will be supplied daily to 11 additional markets for two weeks, alongside Tejgaon Bazar and Kaptan Bazar in the capital.

Meanwhile, retail egg prices have dropped after a month of various initiatives, including imports and direct sales from producers to wholesale markets and retailers. Currently, eggs are priced at Tk150 per dozen, down from Tk180 last month.

The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) will facilitate direct supply of eggs from producers to consumers through dealers at 13 locations within Dhaka North and South city corporations over the next three days. This trial initiative will run for two weeks.

DNCRP Director General Mohammad Alim Akhter Khan announced the plan on Wednesday during a press briefing at the DNCRP office in the TCB Building at Karwan Bazar in the capital.

“A DNCRP meeting was held, attended by representatives from egg-producing farms and corporations, agent-dealers, wholesalers, retailers, egg business associations, and other relevant departments. The focus was to stabilise egg prices and ensure a steady supply. Three key decisions were made, including the trial supply of eggs directly to consumers,” he said.

Alim Akhter added that eggs will be supplied daily at Tejgaon Bazar, Mirpur-1, Mirpur-10, Mohammadpur Agricultural Market, Sadeq Khan Agricultural Market (Mohammadpur), and Uttara-10 (Khamarpura Road) within Dhaka North City Corporation, as well as at Kaptan Bazar, New Market, Khilgaon, Jurain, Konapara Sarulia, Shonir Akhra, and Chittagong Road within Dhaka South City Corporation.

Across these 13 centres, two million eggs will be supplied directly from producers through agents or dealers, under the oversight of the two City Corporations.

He further explained that 650,000 eggs will be supplied daily at each of Tejgaon Bazar and Kaptan Bazar, totalling 1.3 million eggs, with the remaining 700,000 eggs distributed proportionally across the other 11 markets.

“Following the meeting’s decisions, official letters were sent, and City Corporation administrators were verbally informed to ensure sufficient space for vehicle parking and unloading, facilitating the egg supply at the designated 13 markets,” Alim Akhter added.

Regarding egg storage during periods of low demand, he noted that the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock is working on a policy for egg storage, which will be shared with the media in the coming week.

When asked about national egg demand, he said, “The country’s total demand for eggs currently exceeds 45 million per day, some of which we must import. Suppliers have assured us that domestic production can meet this demand, provided there are no adverse weather conditions or sudden disasters.”

He added, “While the government has rightly allowed egg imports to ease the present shortage, the Ministry of Livestock aims to fully satisfy domestic demand with local production in the future, a goal we believe is achievable.”
