The Appeal Division has upheld the High Court's verdict to cancel four extortion cases filed against Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the BNP.

On Sunday, the four-judge bench of the Appeal Division, led by Justice Mohammad Ashfaqul Islam, rejected the leave-to-appeal filed by the state against the High Court's decision.

The state was represented by Additional Attorney General Barrister Anik Ar Hock in the court, while Senior Advocate Zainul Abedin, Barrister Kaisar Kamal, Barrister Ruhul Kuddus Kajol, and Advocate Maksud Ullah appeared on behalf of Tarique Rahman.

Previously, in 2007, various individuals filed extortion cases against Tarique Rahman at Gulshan, Kafrul, Shahbag, and Dhanmondi police stations.

A petition was filed in the High Court under section 561(k) of the Criminal Procedure Code challenging the validity of the cases.

On October 23, the High Court bench, comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain, ruled to cancel the four cases filed against Tarique Rahman.

The state filed a leave-to-appeal against this decision.

In its petition, the state argued that the High Court's decision to cancel the cases was incorrect.
