The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has recovered territories stretching approximately 5km at the Matila border in Moheshpur upazila of the country’s southwestern district in Jhenaidah.
The recovered area, which was under the control of India, is a part of the Kodla River that flows across Bangladesh and Indian territories.
Moheshpur BGB-58 battalion Commanding Officer Lt Col Azizus Shahid shared the development at a press conference held on the river bank along the Matila border on Monday afternoon.
Lt Col Rafique and Matila Camp Commander Mokhtar Hossain were also present there.
The commanding officer said the Kodla River spans 4.8km within Bangladesh's territory. “But, the country had no right on the land and even Bangladesh citizens were not allowed to engage in any activities in the river.”
According to the BGB official, the people of India used it for fishing or other essential tasks.
“The BGB had been struggling for a long time to establish its supremacy on the river, showing proper evidence. Recently, the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) has agreed to return the land to Bangladesh,” Lt Col Azizus Shahid said.
Both the border forces signed a mutual agreement as well in this regard.
From now on, the commanding officer said, Bangladesh nationals can fully utilise the recovered land.
Local people expressed their satisfaction with the establishment of Bangladesh's control over the river.
