The interim government has appointed Ahsan H Mansur as the new governor of the Bangladesh Bank.

A gazette was issued in this regard by the Financial Institutions Division of the finance ministry on Tuesday night.

He will succeed Abdur Rouf Talukder.

Well-known as an analyst in the country’s financial sector, Ahsan Mansur is the executive director at the Policy Research Institute (PRI), a private research organisation.

He has previously held many important positions at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Now nearly 73 years old, Ahsan became the central bank governor as the Advisory Council of the interim government withdrew the age limit, previously set at 67 years for the post.

According to the gazette, the renowned economist has been appointed as the BB governor for the next four years from the date of his joining on the condition that he would cut working relationships with all other organisations.

The governor's position became vacant on 9 August when Abdur Rouf Talukder resigned citing health issues, just four days after Sheikh Hasina stepped down as prime minister and fled the country amid a student-led uprising.
