A juvenile was given the death penalty by a Chattogram court on Wednesday in a case involving the murder of two teenage girls in the district's Sitakunda upazila.
The convict was identified as Abul Hossain, 29, hailed from Abedin Chowdhury Para area under Sitakunda municipality.
Chattogram Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Alim Ullah also awarded financial penalty of Tk 1 lakh to the accused, said Public Prosecutor (PP) Ashok Kumar Das.
The court in the verdict also acquitted another accused Omar Hayat Manik of the charges.
According to deposition of the case, Abul used to stalk victim Sukaloti Tripura, 15, daughter of Pulin Kumar Tripura, and proposed her for several times.
The locals in an arbitration insulted Abul in this regard.
Being infuriated, Abul along with his accomplice including Rajib and Manik entered the house of Sukaloti and strangled her at their residence at Jangle Mahadevpur hill under the upazila on May 18 in 2018.
They later hanged the body with rope to pass it as suicide.
As Sukaloti’s neighbour Rani Tripura, 11, daughter of Suman Tripura, noticed the incident, the criminals also strangled her and hanged the body same way.
Rani’s father Suman Tripura filed a case against four persons including Abul in this connection.
Accused Rajib was killed in a gun attack by the miscreants during the investigation period of the case.
Later, police pressed charge sheet accusing Abul and Manik of the murders.
After hearing from 19 witnesses, the court handed down the verdict in presence of both the accused on Wednesday, he added.
