Apple is reportedly planning to launch its thinnest iPhone to date, the iPhone 17 Air, which is expected to be approximately 2 millimetres thinner than current models. A recent report by Apple analyst Mark Gurman from Bloomberg News suggests the device will debut at Apple's upcoming September 2025 event.

The iPhone 17 Air is anticipated to feature a 6.6-inch OLED display with ProMotion technology, delivering a 120 Hz refresh rate for smoother visuals. This would mark the first time Apple brings this feature to a non-Pro model, suggests the report by Gurman. To achieve a slimmer profile, Apple is expected to employ advanced Touch and Display Driver Integration (TDDI) technology, combining touch and display layers into a single unit.

The device is also rumoured to have a simplified camera setup, including a single 48 MP rear camera and a 24 MP front camera. It will be powered by Apple's A19 chipset, paired with 8 GB of RAM, and will include the company's first in-house 5G modem, states a report by The Verge on the matter.

One notable change is the reported absence of a physical SIM card slot, as the phone is expected to rely entirely on eSIM technology. While this aligns with Apple's move toward a wireless future, it may pose challenges in markets like China, where eSIM adoption remains low.

Gurman highlights that the iPhone 17 Air serves as a significant step toward Apple's vision for foldable devices, acting as a testing ground for technologies that could feature in future foldable iPhones and iPads. Speculations from other sources suggest the pricing of the iPhone 17 Air would start at $899, though it could be higher due to the premium features.

However, please keep in mind that these details have not yet been officially confirmed by Apple and are subject to change. Nonetheless, if the report is true, the rumoured iPhone 17 Air will surpass the 6.9 mm iPhone 6 as Apple's thinnest smartphone and essentially redefine Apple's iconic smartphone lineup.
