Govt revokes Hasina’s passport

The interim government has revoked the passports of 97 individuals, including deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, for their alleged involvement in killings during the July-August uprising and in enforced disappearances.

“The passport department cancelled passports of 22 people involved in enforced disappearances while passports of 75 people, including Sheikh Hasina, involvement in the July killings,” Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder said at a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka on Tuesday evening.

Amid a mass uprising led by students, the former prime minister fled to India on 5 August and has been staying there since then.

Earlier in August, the government cancelled the diplomatic passports of Sheikh Hasina, all former ministers of her deposed government, and lawmakers following the dissolution of both her cabinet and the 12th parliament.

Meanwhile, the Indian government has decided to grant a long-term residence permit to the deposed prime minister for staying in the country.

Highly placed sources confirmed the matter on Tuesday to some media. However, the nature of the permit has not been divulged.
