Bangladesh expresses deep concern over attack on Trump

Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud has condemned the attacks on former US president Donald Trump during his election campaign.

He also expressed deep concern over the attack.

"Our position is very clear. We don't want violence in politics. But we see (in Bangladesh) people being killed and burned, which is against the law. I don't see violence in US politics. It's condemnable and we express deep concern," he said, when asked whether Bangladesh would condemn the attack.

Hasan Mahmud was replying to a question at the foreign ministry on Sunday.

Donald Trump was hit in the ear in an apparent assassination attempt by a gunman at a campaign rally on Saturday, in a chaotic and shocking incident that will fuel fears of instability ahead of the 2024 US presidential election.

The 78-year-old former president was rushed off stage with blood smeared across his face after the shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, while the gunman and a bystander were killed and two spectators critically injured.

The FBI identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old from Pennsylvania's Bethel Park, according to US media.

US President Joe Biden led the condemnation after his election rival was wounded, as some Republicans blamed the Biden campaign for the violence.
