Met office issues 3-day heat alert

Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has again issued a three day heat alert as the ongoing heatwave is expected to continue for the next 72 hours commencing from Monday.

Discomfort might increase due to moisture incursion, said a warning from the Meteorological Department, signed by Meteorologist Bazlur Rashid. 

Meteorologist Bazlur Rashid said: “Although there are some clouds over the country which have somewhat reduced the intensity of the heat, the heatwave is expected to intensify again from Tuesday.”

Previously, the weather office had issued a heatwave alert for 72 hours starting from Friday.

A very severe heat wave is sweeping over the Pabna and Chuadanga districts, according to the BMD.

Besides, a severe heat wave is sweeping over Rajshahi, Tangail, Jessore, and Kushtia districts, and a mild to moderate heat wave is lashing Rangpur, Barisal, and Mymensingh divisions and parts of Dhaka, Rajshahi, Khluna divisions, Srimangal and Chandpur district, said a met office bulletin on Monday.

The heatwave condition may continue, and no marked change is likely in five days commencing 9am on Monday.

The country’s highest temperature was recorded in Chuadanga at 42.2°C on Sunday, and 56mm of rain fell in 24 hours until 6am on Monday.

“Rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind are likely at one or two places over Mymensingh, Chittagong, and Sylhet divisions, with hail at isolated places. The weather may remain mainly dry with a temporary partly cloudy sky elsewhere over the country,” it said.

The day temperature may fall slightly and night temperature may remain nearly unchanged over the country during the period.
