Drivers of battery-run rickshaws blocked roads in Mohakhali and Agargaon areas on Thursday morning, protesting a High Court directive to ban battery-run rickshaws in the capital.
The High Court on Tuesday directed government authorities to take necessary measures to stop the operation of battery-run rickshaws and auto-rickshaws on Dhaka streets within three days.
In response, over a hundred rickshaw drivers gathered on Mohakhali road around 9:30 am, causing heavy traffic congestion on both sides, said Rasel Sarwar, officer-in-charge of Banani Police Station.
Besides, another group of drivers staged a protest on Agargaon road, voicing the same demands.
Commuters shared photos and warnings on social media, urging others to avoid the affected routes.
Traffic police warned that disruptions could continue unless the protests are resolved promptly.
