The government has declared to observe mourning countrywide on Tuesday (July 30) to honour the memory of law enforcement personnel and others who lost their lives during the quota reform protests.
The decision was made during a cabinet meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office on Monday, presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Cabinet Secretary Md. Mahbub Hossain shared this with the journalists following the meeting.
The quota reform movement, which began in the first week of July, escalated into violence by July 15. On July 16, clashes in Dhaka and several other locations resulted in fatalities. The unrest and violence quickly spread across the country, leading to an increase in casualties.
In response to the widespread violence and to maintain law and order, the government imposed a curfew and deployed the army across the nation.
