BNP wants to build discrimination-free democratic Bangladesh: BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman

BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has said his party wants to build a democratic, inclusive, fair and liveable Bangladesh.

“Together, we will build a democratic, fair, inclusive, liveable and enjoyable Bangladesh for all. Let us build a democratic Bangladesh based on a discrimination-free, inclusive and liberal society,” he said while exchanging views with a group of physically challenged people at Agargaon LGED auditorium in the capital on Saturday.

Tarique, who joined the programme virtually from London, further said the BNP wants to build a social system where every person can reach their full potential.

“As a political activist, I assure you that no one will be a victim of physical obstruction or left behind in the future Bangladesh,” he added.

Tarique Rahman said if the BNP forms government, it will establish a separate directorate to coordinate the activities of various ministries and departments alongside carrying out specific programmes for persons with disabilities.

“We want to build a dignified, capable, prosperous society for people with special needs. I and my party, BNP, realise that your problems and suffering are real and deep,” he said.

The BNP leader said if the party comes to power, there will be specialised units in district headquarters hospitals to solve the problems of the disabled, mobile health clinics in remote areas, factories to manufacture assistive devices for the disabled and training and skill development programmes to build the physical capabilities of disabled children.

“I believe that none of you are disabled, but you are capable citizens. Each of you has infinite potential. If elected, the BNP will ensure your civil rights and privileges, like all other citizens of the country,” he added.

The BNP leader also said the party wants to take the country forward with the united efforts of all, including people with disabilities.

Speaking at the programme, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said his party is committed to building an inclusive society that ensures the rights of all.

He said if the BNP returns to power, it will take decisive steps to address the problems faced by physically challenged people, eliminate the discrimination they currently endure, and improve their overall well-being.

Over 150 physically challenged people participated in the programme conducted by Salma Mahbub, general secretary of the Protibondhi Nagorik Shangathaner Parishad.

The participants shared that they face numerous challenges daily, ranging from family and societal difficulties to issues such as transportation barriers, lack of access to government services, limited educational opportunities and various forms of discrimination.

They also highlighted the negative societal attitudes towards them and the exclusion they often experience.
